Anaheim : Farm Owner Agrees to Sell Acreage for Roads

The owner of a strawberry farm in Anaheim has agreed to give up part of his land to make way for roads the city needs for a $200-million development.

The developers had asked Hiroshi Fujishige to sell them about eight acres of his land on 1854 S. Harbor Blvd. so they could comply with a city demand that roads be built for the proposed development on land adjacent to the farm.

Fujishige denied their request until Tuesday, when he surprised members of his family, the developers and the City Council by announcing that he would not interfere with condemnation procedures the city is considering.

“You got to give up something sometimes,” Fujishige said Wednesday.

“The way I figure it, if they want it that bad, they’ll take it,” he said. “As long as I can make a living here, that’s all I care about.”

One of the proposed roads would cut through the middle of his 58-acre farm.
