Sen. Gordon J. Humphrey (R-N.H.), seeking support for an “important symbolic effort” to oppose the Soviet occupation of Afganistan, prompted a bill to repeal the most-favored-nation status granted to goods imported from Afganistan. “This would withdraw a certain measure ofcredibility we now grant the puppet Afgan government,” Humphrey told a press conference. Granting most-favored-nation permits a reduction in tariffs. Afganistan sends about $12 million worth of goods to the United States each year, chiefly raw cashmere and carpets.
