The House voted overwhelmingly to cap spending next year by the National Science Foundation at its current levels. President Reagan had proposed increasing the foundation budget to $1.57 billion, up from $1.50 billion this year, and the House Committee and Science and Technology expanded that to $1.60 billion. However, by a 407-4 vote, the House approved a budget-freeze amendment. Earlier this month, the House voted 369 to 36 to freeze the budget of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
