San Jose Mayor Tom McEnery described as “dumb” the actions of a top aide, who called a radio talk show on which the mayor was a guest and, posing as an average citizen, heaped praise on McEnery and his accomplishments in office. McEnery, while a guest on a San Francisco radio station talk show, took a call from a man who identified himself as “John from Cupertino.” John, who was actually McEnery’s chief of staff, Dean Munro, said the mayor was doing a great job and praised McEnery for various actions. When some City Hall listeners thought they recognized Munro’s voice, Munro first denied, then admitted making the call.
