The Bank of California has filed a civil suit against the estate of a deceased trust officer alleging that he had embezzled perhaps as much as $10 million before his death last year. In the Los Angeles Superior Court suit, the bank says it determined after an internal investigation that Gary L. Stone had “successfully utilized a myriad of sophisticated methods” to divert funds from some of the accounts to his own benefit. It seeks damages that it said will probably exceed $10 million. Stone, a victim of AIDS, died April 18, 1984. He had worked for the bank as a trust officer since 1967.
