Reagan Policy in Central America
Ariel Dorfman, in his article (Editorial Pages, April 11), “If the Contras Win--What Then?” makes some wild assumptions regarding a possible contra victory in Nicaragua. He predicts blood baths, an international war of attrition, young Americans dying in Nicaragua and more if the contras win. He also describes the tide against communism as a “mythic event.”
The Soviet Union is the expansionist nation bent on world domination. The United States has no international hegemonic ambitions. But neither does the U.S. government, I am sure, consider communism to be an irresistible force. Although the United States is always willing to negotiate, it will never roll over in submission.
Apparently Dorfman hasn’t heard that socialism has failed everywhere it has been tried.
Fortunately, we have the right President at the right time in history to face up to the international threat. President Reagan remembers, as I do, Nikita Khrushchev shouting, “We will bury you.”
