Carson Mayor Reelected, Counsel Rules
The Carson City Council has reelected Kay Calas mayor, the city’s legal counsel decided after reexamining the council’s 2-1 vote for her.
With only two of the five council members--Calas and Vera Robles DeWitt--supporting the reelection, City Atty. Glenn Watson had decided that Calas was not reelected. Councilman Thomas Mills opposed her reelection, Councilman Walter J. Egan abstained and Councilwoman Sylvia Muise was absent.
After reviewing city procedures, Watson decided that Calas had been reelected because she received a majority of the votes, although not a majority of the full council.
Council members may select a new mayor and mayor pro tem each April.
Calas, 60, has been a councilwoman for nine years, including four terms as mayor and two terms as mayor pro tem. A Carson resident for 39 years, she is owner of Calas Investments, a real estate company.
Muise, who has served for about 3 1/2 years, was reelected for a fourth one-year term as mayor pro tem.
