Western Digital Reports a Real Success Story

Although growth in the nation’s computer industry has tapered off, Irvine-based Western Digital Corp. posted a 76% increase in earnings and 48% rise in sales for its third fiscal quarter, ended March 31. Additionally, the company said its net income for the first nine months of fiscal 1985 is almost double the figure posted a year ago.

The manufacturer of disk controllers, which convey information between computers and computer memory systems, earned $3.1 million in the third quarter, compared to $1.8 million in the third quarter of 1984. Sales revenue for the quarter totaled $40.7 million, compared to $27.6 million during the same three-month period the year before.

For the first nine months of its current fiscal year, Western Digital earned $8.8 million, up 92% from $4.6 million during the first three quarters of fiscal 1984. Sales rose 64% to $117 million from $71 million.
