Rowland Heights : High School Leads State in Improved Test Scores
Rowland High School has won $140,818 from the state because its students recorded the greatest improvement in California Assessment Program scores of any school tested in the state.
The cash incentive program, begun this year, is based on the number of students who took the test and the degree of improvement over previous scores. Rowland earned the largest cash award.
Rowland Unified School District officials said the high school’s 1984 test scores were up 6.8% in reading, 5% in writing, 5.7% in math and 2.2% in spelling over the previous year’s, with over 93% of the seniors tested, making theirs the greatest improvement of the 530 high schools in the state that took the test.
Nogales High School, also in the Rowland district, was among the top three scorers in Los Angeles County, and will receive $109,291.
The state Department of Education says the schools will receive the funds sometime in June, and that they are earmarked for student programs and materials only.
Rowland High School Principal Tom Aney said his school’s award may be used to purchase word processors and computers for classroom use.
