Peking Reports Air Is Heavily Polluted
The air of the Chinese capital contains nearly three times the maximum recommended amount of pollutants, the chief of the nation’s environmental agency was quoted as saying Thursday.
The official English-language China Daily said Qu Geping reported that Peking’s air has 840 micrograms of soot per cubic meter, compared with a recommended maximum level of 300.
He called for immediate measures to control smog and acid rain. He also said something should be done about noise pollution and pollutants in underground water.
