Syrian Envoy, Wife Escape Geneva Blast
A bomb tore apart a Syrian diplomat’s limousine here Friday, but he and his wife escaped virtually unscathed, Swiss police said. Three passers-by suffered minor injuries.
Police said Ahmed Saker, charge d’affaires of the Syrian mission to the United Nations in Geneva was driving to work with his wife when a bomb exploded in their limousine on the Quai de Mont Blanc, a main thoroughfare along Lake Geneva.
The blast ripped the hood off the car, shattered the windshield and set the car ablaze. However, Saker and his wife jumped out before the car caught fire and suffered only from shock, the police statement added.
Two men “of Arab origin” were arrested. They are also suspected of the bombing earlier in the day of the Libyan airline office that blew out windows and damaged cars nearby.
The Swiss federal prosecutor’s office in Bern saidinterrogation of the two disclosed that a third bomb had been planted in the car of another Syrian diplomat. That device was defused.
Police said the two men being held had crossed into Switzerland several days ago with false passports.
