Landfill Study Delayed: An Orange County commission Thursday decided against plunging immediately into further study of Coal and Gypsum canyons, two Anaheim Hills sites proposed for a county landfill. Instead, Orange County Waste Management Advisory Commission members reiterated a request made at their last meeting--that there be an overall assessment of potential landfill sites and alternatives in northern Orange County. The commission did not endorse an environmental impact report for Coal and Gypsum canyons, leaving that decision for a future meeting. A county-ordered study on both sites pointed to several problems in the canyons, including potential contamination of ground water if proper precautions are not taken, a nearby active fault and ground contamination by organic compounds. Commissioner Norma Hicks said she would like an overall study on all potential landfill land because “I don’t seem to find rhyme and reason on how they’re sited.”
