The nation faces a critical shortage of teachers over the next 10 years, with an estimated 1 million new teachers needed by 1990, according to a report in the Washington Post. The problem could become a crisis, education analysts and teachers’ union officials say, because fewer college graduates are becoming teachers, elementary school enrollments are expected to rise, much of the teaching force is nearing retirement and younger teachers are defecting to more lucrative fields.
