The personal computers are aimed at rivaling IBM’s newest and most powerful personal computer, the PC-AT. Compaq also said it cut prices of its existing personal computers by between 4% and 20%. Data General, meanwhile, said lower costs enabled it to reduce prices of its portable computers by up to $600. NCR and Compaq are among several firms with plans to market a computer that can operate software designed for the PC-AT, a powerful computer that can serve several users at once. The developments are similar to the appearance of so-called clones when IBM introduced its original Personal Computer four years ago.
