Iran’s Revolutionary Guards arrested about 500 people in Tehran during the last two days for violating the strict code of Islamic behavior, the semiofficial Iranian newspaper Islamic Republic reported Tuesday.

The newspaper, published in Tehran, said the people were arrested for “violating the rules of public morality”--a phrase usually used to indicate women not wearing veils and men wearing tight-fitting clothes such as jeans, T-shirts or short-sleeved shirts.

Tehran residents contacted by telephone from Athens said the announcement of the arrests shows that the campaign to enforce the veil and discourage Western dress has continued. A week ago, President Ali Khamenei appealed to Iranian fundamentalists to stop attacking women on the streets for dressing immodestly.
