Unlike most new fathers, Sheik Mohammed Abu Zidan is blase about the birth this week of his youngest son--his 44th child.

“With the first two children, a man gets excited,” he told Israel radio. “But with 44, you don’t get excited any more.”

Abu Zidan, a Bedouin who lives in Israel’s southern Negev desert, said two of his four wives are pregnant.

“A man without a family feels weak,” he said. “On the other hand, it is very difficult for a man with four wives and 44 children. But I manage.”

He added that were he able to start over again, he would prefer only one wife, “which would be less trouble,” and have four or five children.
