The 16-week-old curfew in troubled New Caledonia was suspended Friday, the French High Commission announced.

It said High Commissioner Edgard Pisani acted because the French Pacific island territory is calm and tension has eased, but noted that the curfew was suspended and not lifted. The curfew was imposed Jan. 12 after at least 22 people had died in violence since November, when Melanesian militants stepped up their demands for independence.
