Voters in the mountain canton of Glarus in eastern Switzerland decided Sunday to lift the prohibition on concubinage--unmarried couples living together.

About 7,500 men and women gathered to take part in the “Landsgemeinde,” a rare tradition in which citizens vote by show of hands on questions concerning the community.

Concubinage is still forbidden in a few Swiss cantons.
