For the first time in recent memory, the state Supreme Court included a brother act Thursday as Justice Malcolm Lucas was joined by his older brother, Campbell, a state appeals court justice.

Campbell Lucas was appointed to the 2nd District Court of Appeal last year by Gov. George Deukmejian after spending 14 years as a Superior Court judge in Los Angeles.

Malcolm Lucas was named to the Supreme Court by Deukmejian last March.

Chief Justice Rose Elizabeth Bird, who fills temporary vacancies on the court, named Campbell Lucas to replace Justice Joseph Grodin on a case involving collective bargaining rights for University of California medical residents. Grodin disqualified himself from the case, as justices usually do when they have a connection with a party or a lawyer.
