The Food and Drug Administration, acting at the height of the spring allergy season, announced its approval of the first antihistamine that generally does not cause users to become sleepy or dizzy. The FDA said it had approved the sale of the prescription drug terfenadine, which will be marketed under the trade name Seldane by Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals of Cincinnati. Antihistamines relieve symptoms such as runny nose and sneezing that result from short-term allergies like hay fever.
