General Electric Co., the nation’s fourth-largest defense contractor, goes on trial in Philadelphia today, accused of overcharging the government by more than $800,000 on Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missile contracts. GE is charged with four counts of making and presenting false claims for payment and 104 counts of making false statements to the Air Force on refitting contracts for the Minuteman Mark-12A.
