Uganda Thwarts Assassination
Gunmen hurling hand grenades and firing automatic weapons today invaded offices of the Interior Ministry, but police ran them off in a gun battle that left at least eight people seriously wounded.
Police said Interior Minister John Luwuliza Kirunda, general secretary of the ruling Uganda People’s Congress Party, was probably the target of the attack. He was said to have escaped injury. At least eight people, including a police officer, were seriously hurt in the 20-minute firefight, police said. No group claimed responsibility for the apparent assassination attempt.
