The government today proposed new rules to curb auto theft nationwide by requiring a marking system for the major parts of frequently stolen vehicles, Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Dole announced.

Under the proposal, some form of identification would be placed on up to 14 major auto parts beginning with the 1987 model year that hits the market late summer of 1986. The statute would apply to cars, trucks or buses that are on the government’s list.
