Poland’s Communist Party announced the resignation from his party posts of Lt. Gen. Miroslaw Milewski, who was responsible for supervising the security apparatus last year when three secret police officers murdered Father Jerzy Popieluszko, a popular Roman Catholic priest and a supporter of the outlawed Solidarity trade union. Milewski, 57, is leaving the ruling Politburo, the secretariat and the Central Committee.
