An Indian government official confirmed that Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s U.S. visit June 12-15 will not be canceled in the aftermath of the FBI’s arrest of five Sikhs in a plot to kill Gandhi during the visit. India’s Finance Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh told Parliament that the trip will go on as planned. Singh’s comments came after several members of the Lok Sabha, or principal house of Parliament, had urged a postponement of the visit. Meanwhile, the External Affairs Ministry sent a message to Washington expressing its “deep appreciation” to the U.S. government for foiling the plot.
