UPI reported that it held talks with Reuters.

United Press International officials held “an informal discussion” with executives from the British wire service although “no formal or written offer was presented,” as a UPI story earlier this week had predicted, Bill Adler, spokesman for UPI, said. The two sides might meet again, however. In the meantime, UPI co-owner Douglas Ruhe said the IRS has written him and colleague William Geissler that it intends to assess the two personally for most of the $1.8 million that UPI owes in back taxes. The two men have 30 days to appeal the IRS’ letter, dated April 30, though Ruhe said he has not yet decided what to do. The IRS apparently took the action after UPI’s filing for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
