Movie Stars and Farm Policy
Congressional Democrats must be suffering from an attack of Tinseltown-itis! Sissy Spacek, Jane Fonda and Jessica Lange have testified before Congress “about the emotional toll being exacted by America’s agricultural crisis.”?
Since when does playing a part, learning your lines, or even living with farm families make an actress an expert on agricultural crises? Ten years ago Fonda was an analyst on “wars.” Today she is sought after for her agricultural expertise?
Have these congressmen been so influenced by films that they find celluloid to be larger than life? If this is how the Democratic congressmen waste taxpayers’ money, they will neither keep their majority in the House nor have a shot at the presidency in 1988.
If they believe they have sufficient background to grapple with the farmers’ real-life problems, then let them listen to testimony from real people.
