The death toll rose to 145 in a massacre by Tamil separatists in Sri Lanka. Weeping relatives crowded the mortuary in Anuradhapura, the city where most of the killings took place, to try to identify the dead. Officials and news accounts said that in reprisal, majority Sinhalese attackers boarded a coastal ferry and hacked to death as many as 40 Tamils.
