Canadian and U.S. officials are drafting a cleanup plan for the Niagara River, which was recently cited as the chief contributor of pollutants in Lake Ontario, Canadian Minister of Environment Suzanne Blais-Grenier announced Thursday.

“We have to start acting and do it as soon as we can,” she said in responding to a report by Environment Canada that found 3,200 tons a year of pollution flowing into the Niagara River, six times the amount reported last fall by a Canadian-U.S. study group.

The report said 61 U.S. hazardous waste sites have “significant potential” to contaminate the river, while 28 of the sites have contributed or were currently contributing contaminants.
