The airplane that vanished from Japanese radar screens off the coast of Siberia may have belonged to the Soviet airline Aeroflot, Japanese officials said. But they said they do not know its fate and that its identity “needs further confirmation.” Aeroflot and Soviet officials said they had no information on the reports. The apparent disappearance occurred near where a South Korean airliner was shot down by a Soviet fighter in 1983, killing all 269 aboard.
