In a major step toward the first human vaccine against the disease, researchers said they have mass-produced an antibody-stimulating protein from malaria organisms and used it to create immunity in animals. The animal results were so encouraging that human trials of a potential vaccine could begin this year, said researchers from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington and Smith Kline & French Laboratories in Philadelphia. The reports are to be published today in the journal Science.
