More Jewish migrants left the Soviet Union last month than in any of the preceding 20 months, with 166 arriving in Vienna on their way to new homes, the International Committee for Migration reported Friday.

Sixty-six went to Israel and the remaining 100 moved to Italy pending transfer to other countries, the committee said.

This was the highest monthly total since July, 1983. Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union has declined sharply in recent years from a peak of 51,330 in 1979. But this year the trend has been upward with 61 departures in January, 88 in February and 98 in March.
