A scuffle with a Washington State Patrol officer after a routine traffic stop resulted in death for a 23-year-old Milpitas, Calif., soldier stationed at Fort Lewis. He was identified as Sgt. Allen D. Janke, a member of the First Special Forces Group. Authorities in the Tacoma area said Janke was pulled over by Trooper David Fenn on Interstate 5 near Madigan Army Medical Center and that a fight ensued. Fenn reportedly sustained minor injuries and Janke died at the scene, apparently after being shot. Officials would not disclose whether Janke was armed or what led to the altercation.
