Hotel rates across Mexico are likely to jump by as much as 40% before the start of the fall-winter season, a hotel executive said Wednesday.

Roberto Zapata, president of the Mexico City Hotel Assn., said the increase will help hotel owners “cope with rising costs and stay in operation.” Although Zapata predicted that the rate boost will not “result in any real increase in costs” to foreign visitors, other tourist officials have warned that Mexico is gradually pricing itself out of the tourist market.
