French Pick Military Chief

PARIS —
President Francois Mitterrand’s chief military aide, air force Gen. Jean Saulnier, was named Wednesday to be chief of staff of the French armed forces. A fighter pilot in Indochina in the 1950s and later head of France’s strategic air forces, Saulnier will succeed Gen. Jeannou Lacaze, 61, who is retiring from active duty.
