In 1946, a group of Valencia High School alumni got together and erected a plaque on the schoolgrounds to honor Placentia residents who had lost their lives in World War II.

Today, another group of alumni will honor those who died in the Korean War and seven Placentia residents who died in the Vietnam War.

In conjunction with the local American Legion post, Superior Court Judge Francisco Bresiono, the keynote speaker, will dedicate two new bronze plaques at 11:15 a.m. at the campus, 500 N. Bradford Ave., Principal Ron Cozort said.

At 8 a.m. on Memorial Day, the Fullerton Emblem Club will sponsor a service at the Hillcrest Park, at the intersection of Harbor and Brea boulevards, where the the names of those killed in World War II are burned into a redwood slab.

The Hillcrest War Memorial service will include the group’s color guard and the use of the flag from the battleship Arizona, which was sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Emblem Club member Mary Elliott said that for the past three years she has researched the names of Fullerton residents killed during both the Korean and the Vietnam wars for a service which is “very dear to our hearts.”
