American visitors to South Africa are warned not to travel into the countryside without contacting a U.S. diplomatic mission to learn if the region is safe, U.S. Embassy spokesman Frank Lattanzi said Thursday. He said special warnings have been issued since mid-April.

Black rioting since August has become a daily occurrence, and at times has spilled out of segregated townships. The violence has killed about 300 blacks and at least three whites.
