Deficit Up 9% From ’84 Despite April Surplus
Associated Press
WASHINGTON —
The government enjoyed a rare monthly budget surplus last month, courtesy of a surge of money from tax returns, the Treasury Department reported Thursday.
The April surplus of $12.37 billion still left the total deficit for the fiscal year at $115.74 billion, 9% ahead of the level at this time last year.
The Reagan Administration is forecasting a record deficit of $203 billion for the current fiscal year, 16% higher than last year’s $175.34 billion.
