A train carrying hazardous chemicals collided with a truck Friday, injuring at least 15 persons, causing a fire that destroyed two homes and forcing about 1,000 people, including 17 jail inmates, to evacuate.

Officials contained the fire two hours after the collision and brought in bulldozers to dam a creek and prevent acid from the train from reaching Lake Leon and contaminating the local water supply.

Fire destroyed at least two homes. Residents within a mile of the explosion in the western Texas town were evacuated, and 17 jail prisoners were held under guard in City Hall, officials said.
