Deputy Supt. Bernard (Barney) Garen will retire from the Torrance Unified School District, effective June 29, ending a 37-year career as a teacher and administrator in public schools.

Garen, 64, said he was leaving the Torrance schools under the district’s early retirement plan. He said he will continue to live in Redondo Beach, where he and his wife, Ruth, a retired county auditor, have made their home since 1960.

Garen, who holds doctoral degrees in both education and law, said he plans to remain active as a school consultant and private attorney.

The retiring administrator began his teaching career in Inglewood in 1946, then moved on to assignments in Montebello and at Washington Elementary School in Redondo Beach. He was assistant superintendent for business in the Redondo Beach district for eight years, then became Torrance’s director of facilities in the 1960s.

After stints at Barstow and in private business, Garen returned to Torrance in 1969, where he has remained, except for about two years as the Inglewood district’s business manager.
