COMMENCEMENT 1985 : University of La Verne

The University of La Verne held its 93rd commencement exercises Sunday at Arnett Field.

Degrees: 1,104 diplomas awarded, including 490 graduate degrees.

Speaker: Dr. Stephen C. Morgan, president of the University of La Verne, spoke about the importance of a liberal arts education. “The strong liberal arts heritage familiarizes us with society’s long-held knowledge, those aspects of civilization which have not only survived but have shaped centuries. The liberal arts gives us historical perspective and this . . . can give us a unique future perspective.”

Honorary Degrees:

Robert H. Phinny, former U.S. ambassador to Swaziland, doctor of laws: “Prominent in the Republican Party, (he) has served on his party’s finance committee. (He is an) ambassador, distinguished businessman, community and national leader, involved citizen, friend of education and of the university.”

Warren Carter, businessman and University of La Verne trustee, doctor of laws: “With the growth of Bakersfield as a center for agri-business, Mr. Carter has become a leader among the business people of that city . . . (He is a) loyal alumnus, prominent businessman, community leader, man with a caring heart and strong drive toward goals he sets.”

Other Graduations:

UCLA School of Law: State Atty. Gen. John Van de Kamp spoke Sunday to the school’s 312 graduates in the Los Angeles Tennis Center on campus. Professor Stanley Siegel, chosen by the graduating class as the 1985 Professor of the Year, also spoke.

Whittier College: Author, lecturer and humanitarian Jan de Hartog addressed the college’s 82nd graduating class on the subject of the school’s Quaker heritage. Hartog, a Quaker, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Awarded were 188 bachelors degrees, 32 masters and 133 law degrees.

University of Redlands: A total of 983 undergraduate degrees and 130 graduate degrees were awarded during three separate commencement ceremonies held on campus over the weekend. Robert Pierpont and Drs. Donald Kleckner and William McDonald were featured speakers.
