Mexico City Orders Firms Out
Ecology Minister Guillermo Carrillo Arena has ordered cement and cellulose paper companies to leave Mexico City within one year because of the pollution they produce, news reports said.
Carrillo announced that the factories will be removed from Mexico City and relocated in the states of Mexico and Tlaxcala.
“I would like next April 30 to be the date that these industries leave and I have proposed it to the industries and to President Miguel de la Madrid,” Carrillo said, referring to cement and cellulose manufacturers.
Carrillo added that the Ecological Ministry is investing $6.25 million in water treatment plants in the 20 principal cities in the nation. He explained that the investment will be paid for by the same industries that contaminate the waters.
“We are not deteriorating the national economy with costs that are not recuperable,” Carrillo said, adding that 40% of the costs will be covered by Pemex, the state-run oil consortium; Azucar, a major sugar company, and Fertimex, a large fertilizer company.
