Pope Tightens Discipline Over Franciscan Order

Another major Roman Catholic order--the Franciscans--has come under Pope John Paul II’s criticism and oversight by his personal delegate.

Just as the Pope intervened last year to tighten discipline over the Jesuits, he named his own representative to preside over the Franciscans’ general meeting now in progress until June 23.

The Pope told the Franciscans to curb “theories and practices” that cause ambiguities and a “ruinous crisis of authority” and to “live more in silence and less in propaganda” in serving the poor.
