The Region : ‘Urban Terrorist’ Gets 138-Year Term

Share

Calling the defendant “an urban terrorist, little different from the terrorists we find in the Middle East,” Superior Court Judge Richard A. Adler sentenced a Compton man to 138 years in state prison for a four-month-long rampage in Sherman Oaks and Encino that included murder, rape, sodomy and armed robbery. The earliest that Johnny Earl Evans, 23, can be released from prison will be in 69 years, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Steven A. Sowders. A Van Nuys jury in February convicted Evans of 35 felony counts, which included the murder of 78-year-old Leonard Flaum. A total of 23 victims were involved in 10 separate incidents, and more than $44,000 worth of property was stolen, police said.
