College World Series : Miami Overpowers Stanford With 5 Home Runs, 17-3

Greg Ellena and Rusty DeBold hit two homers each and Chris Hart added another to lead Miami to a record-setting 17-3 victory over top-ranked Stanford in the first round of the NCAA College World Series Saturday night at Omaha, Neb.

The two homers each by Ellena and DeBold tied a tournament record shared by six others. Each hit a three-run shot, to go with another three-run homer by Hart, to break a tournament home run record of four in one game set by Arizona State in 1981.

DeBold’s 11 total bases also tied a national tournament record.

Miami’s Kevin Sheary (5-4) pitched seven strong innings to pick up the victory. Jeff Ballard (14-3), the first of five Stanford pitchers, allowed seven runs in 4 innings.

Stanford scored in the third on Mark Davis’ run-scoring single, and in the sixth on Mike DeBenon’s RBI double and a run-scoring groundout by Toi Cook.

Texas 2, Arizona 1--Billy Bates doubled home Robbie Byers with the tie-breaking run in the top of the eighth to push the Longhorns past the Wildcats.

Swindell (18-1) scattered five hits and retired 13 in a row after giving up a pair of singles in the fifth inning.

Arizona scored in the fourth when Chip Hale singled, was sacrificed to second and scored on a double by Gar Millay.

Texas evened the game, 1-1, without a hit in the seventh. Bates walked to lead off the inning and scored on a walk and two errors.

Texas (61-12) advances to Tuesday’s winners’ bracket game against Miami (50-15). Arizona (47-21) meets Stanford in an elimination game today.
