Sidney A. Levitz will remain a director and consultant with San Diego-based Cousins Home Furnishings, which he founded in 1979. Levitz and his two brothers directed the rapid growth of Levitz Furniture during the 1960s and 1970s. He opened the first Cousins store in Sacramento and, by late 1983, was operating 14 stores in California. In 1984, Brunton Corp., a Canadian-based company, purchased 56% of Cousins’ stock and began operating the stores as the Brick Warehouse. Chairman Michael J. McKeon said that the 61-year-old Levitz “felt some strain on his health” and that his departure had “nothing to do” with the company’s nine-month losses of $9.4 million.
