Environmentalists wrapped a symbolic mile-long sewer pipe around Los Angeles City Hall to protest the dumping of untreated sewage into Santa Monica Bay. According to Howard Bennett, a spokesman for the Coalition to Stop Dumping Sewage Into the Ocean, the demonstration was against the “Hyperion Treatment Plant in Playa del Rey and the attempt by the City Council to lower the sewage treatment standards.” The symbolic sewage pipe was actually a brown ribbon with petitions attached protesting the proposed lower treatment levels.
