A plan to shut off the seven-square-mile Yosemite Valley to cars, which was not implemented over the Memorial Day weekend, may be imposed for the first time later this year, depending on traffic. The National Park Service had announced the ban plan before the holiday, but last weekend’s traffic peaked well below the 5,900-car limit that would have put the restrictions into effect. Officials say heavy traffic on the remaining major summer weekends--Fourth of July and Labor Day--could trigger the restrictions. Under the plan, only motorists with reservations for lodging or campgrounds would be allowed to enter the visitors’ center at Yosemite Village, hub of Yosemite National Park, 200 miles southeast of San Francisco.
