MADRID — Antonio Lopez, Spain’s leading figurative painter, has been awarded the prestigious $12,000 Prince of Asturia’s prize for his contribution to Spanish art.
The nine-member jury cited Lopez’s super-realist paintings as “painstaking and reflective works, the testimony of the artist’s wonder at life.”
Lopez has a wide following in the United States where his work is in major art collections, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Detroit and Cincinnati art museums.
