Reagan Policy in Nicaragua

President Reagan has made a most undemocratic and shocking statement with reference to his stubborn second attempt to get aid for the contras in Nicaragua. He said, “We have to get where we can run a foreign policy without a committee of 535 telling us what to do.”
This is a direct defiance of our system of checks and balances. We must thank our Founding Fathers for creating a balance of power between Congress, the President and the Supreme Court. The President must not be allowed to evade it.
The fact of the matter is that the House of Representatives is right in voting against any aid to the contras and the President is wrong. Furthermore, he is disregarding public opinion on this issue.
Attempting to overthrow the government of Nicaragua will surely lead to our involvement in a Vietnam-type war in Central America. The public opinion against such involvement is crystal clear.
